AI game engine: six engines, one prompt
What is an AI game engine? It is a game engine with AI built in, so you describe a game and the engine's agent builds, runs, and fixes it. Shiny Gen has six: the Godot engine (our fork, with a WebGPU renderer, writing real GDScript) and five retro engines we built, GBA, GBC, N64, GameCube, and DS, whose games compile to a real file you can download. You pick the engine when you start a game.

What you can make
One game per engine family, from the free catalogue (play it, then remix it into your own copy):
- Shiny Rapids: a 3D rafting game on the Godot engine: hold the left or right side of the screen to paddle down a river that never ends.
- Shiny Monsters Advance: a monster-collecting RPG on the GBA engine, with a town, text boxes, and monster matches.
- Shiny Kart 64: a kart racer on the N64 engine, with laps, a timer, and a track map.
- Garden Keeper: a DS engine game: harvest toadstools before sunset, with the garden in 3D on the top screen and the touch screen for sowing.
The six engines
| Engine | What it is | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Godot | Our Godot fork with a WebGPU renderer; games are written in real GDScript | Plays in the browser and the apps; exportable for the web as a zip (needs any one purchase, from $2.99) |
| GBA | Game Boy Advance class games, compiled from your prompt | A ROM; runs on a real GBA through a flash cart (download needs any one purchase, from $2.99) |
| GBC | Game Boy Color class games, compiled from your prompt | A ROM; runs on real hardware through a flash cart (download needs any one purchase, from $2.99) |
| N64 | An N64-class engine we wrote, including our own RSP microcode | A ROM (download needs any one purchase, from $2.99) |
| GameCube | A GameCube-class engine we wrote | A .dol file (download needs any one purchase, from $2.99) |
| DS | A DS-class two-screen handheld engine we wrote | A .nds file (download needs any one purchase, from $2.99) |
All six are live, and every one appears in the free catalogue. The Android app runs on Retroid-class handhelds with controller support, and DS games use both screens on dual-screen handhelds.
What makes it an AI engine
- The agent plays the game it makes. It runs the game, takes screenshots, presses the controls, reads the runtime errors, and fixes them, in the built-in agent and over MCP.
- AI editors in the same project: images and sprites, sprite animation, 3D models and worlds, sound effects, and music as editable scores.
- Bring your own AI. A hosted MCP server lets Claude, ChatGPT, or any MCP client build in your live project, with nothing to install (how). The code an outside assistant writes costs no gems.
- A whole engine, not a renderer. Physics, scenes, input, and audio are there already, in the browser, so you do not hand-code the tooling.
How to choose
Choose Godot if you want a game that plays everywhere Shiny Gen runs and want real GDScript to read and edit. Choose a retro engine if you want a cartridge-style game and a file you own: the retro engines are for games you make in Shiny Gen, not for playing other people's games. They are not emulators and cannot load commercial or third-party ROMs. Guides: GBA, GBC, turning a game into a ROM.
Limits
- The Godot project runs on Shiny Gen's sandboxed fork (Godot 4.6.2 with a lot added), so the stock Godot editor cannot open it, and there is no project download.
- No native desktop or mobile builds of your game yet.
- Web export is in the web app only, and it needs any one purchase, from $2.99. A game exported for the web plays solo.

What it costs
Free to make, play, and share. AI generation uses gems. Any one purchase, from a $2.99 starter pack, also unlocks exporting your games as files.
FAQ
What is an AI game engine?
An AI game engine is a game engine with AI built in: you describe a game and the engine's agent builds, runs, and fixes it. Shiny Gen has six such engines, Godot plus GBA, GBC, N64, GameCube, and DS engines, chosen per game.
Is Shiny Gen's Godot the real Godot engine?
It is a fork of the Godot engine (4.6.2 with a lot added) compiled for the web with a WebGPU renderer, and games are real GDScript. Because it is a sandboxed fork, the stock Godot editor cannot open a Shiny Gen project.
Are the GBA, GBC, N64, GameCube, and DS engines emulators?
No. They are engines we built that compile games you make in Shiny Gen into real files: a ROM for GBA, GBC, and N64, a .dol for GameCube, and a .nds for DS. They cannot play commercial or third-party ROMs. Downloading the file needs any one purchase, from $2.99.
Which engine should I pick?
Pick Godot for a game that plays in the browser and the apps and has code you can edit. Pick a retro engine for a cartridge-style game and a file you own.
Does it run in the browser?
Yes. The whole engine and the editors run in any modern browser, about 17 MB on first load, with nothing to install. There are also iPhone, iPad, and Android apps.
